Green Homes Grants for Solar Thermal Now Available

After being launched as part of the government's plan to "build back greener" the Green Homes Grant scheme is now closed.

Only 6 months after launching in September 2020, to much fanfare, the scheme will come to an end at 5pm on Wednesday 31st March 2021. The previous end date was set to be 31st March 2022 after a recent decision to extend the initiative.

The Green Homes Grants scheme is now open, meaning homeowners and landlords in England can apply for up to £5,000 (or £10,000 in some cases) towards the cost of installing solar thermal panels.

The UK has a target of reaching net-zero carbon emissions by 2050. To achieve this, the government has announced a £3 billion investment into a carbon reduction strategy, and £2 billion of this is being allocated to the Green Homes Grants scheme.

Until the end of March 2021, over 600,000 eligible households will be able to improve their energy efficiency with a voucher to cover two-thirds of the cost (up to £5,000) of installing insulation and/or a low carbon heating system. For low income households, solar panel grants of up to £10,000 will be available.

The low carbon heating systems which are eligible are: air source heat pumps, ground source heat pumps, biomass boilers, and solar thermal panels.
