Solar Panels Results in £0 Electricity Bill for Gateshead Pensioner

By Katie Anderson on June 22, 2011

A tenant in Gateshead who recently moved into her new home was shocked when she received her first electricity bill and discovered she had nothing to pay.

Pensioner Grace Quinn moved into her brand new two-bedroomed bungalow in Kibblesworth, Gateshead last September. The property, which was built by Frank Haslam Milan (FHM) North East on behalf of The Gateshead Housing Company, features six solar PV panels. Although Mrs Quinn was aware that the installation of the solar panels would help her to save money, the news came as something of a shock, albeit a nice one.

“I was shocked – I had been to meetings while the house was being built and had been told about the solar panels and that they would help me save money but I never expected to have nothing to pay,” said Mrs Quinn.

“The winter before last, I spent £280 on gas and for the same time this year I only paid £35,” she added.

Solar PV panels collect solar radiation from the sun and converts that energy into electricity. A solar PV system can reduce your energy bills, and can result in householders paying nothing, or even making money by selling any unused energy back to the grid via the Government feed-in-tariff (FIT) scheme.

Earn Money via the Feed-In TarrifThe Government's Feed-In Tariff was launched on April 1st 2010 to encourage homeowners to generate their own electricity - it is split into two methods of revenue.

The Generation Tariff earns you a fixed income for every kilowatt hour of electricity you generate. And, The Export Tariff earns you income for every kilowatt hour you generate and sell back to the grid.

An average 3/4 bedroom house fitted with 2.5kw Solar PV panels and normal electricity usage would earn over £850 p/a tax free!

Add this to an approximate £145 reduction in your electricity usage and you could benefit by over £1,000 per year.
