Solar Cells

A solar cell is any device that converts the energy from the sun into electricity through the photovoltaic effect. Solar PV panels are made up of a group of these solar cells which collectively capture sunlight and convert it into solar power.

When researching solar cells you may also come across the term ‘high-efficiency solar cells’ which are a class of solar cells that are used in solar power systems which can generate more electricity per cost of the generation. With the cost of Solar PV electricity being historically high, the two main aims to make cells more accessible are to decrease their cost per unit area or increase the efficiency.

Monocrystalline cells, cut from a single crystal of silicon, are the most efficient cells currently in solar panels used to power homes, however they are the most expensive to produce

Did you know?

Earn Money via the Feed-In TarrifThe Government's Feed-In Tariff was launched on April 1st 2010 to encourage homeowners to generate their own electricity - it is split into two methods of revenue.

The Generation Tariff earns you a fixed income for every kilowatt hour of electricity you generate. And, The Export Tariff earns you income for every kilowatt hour you generate and sell back to the grid.

An average 3/4 bedroom house fitted with 2.5kw Solar PV panels and normal electricity usage would earn over £850 p/a tax free!

Add this to an approximate £145 reduction in your electricity usage and you could benefit by over £1,000 per year.
